Kitchen Reno Idea Board

The kitchen is really the heart of the home and right now mine is quite dated. Paul and I have been talking about a kitchen renovation since moving in last September, and we are finally getting to the point of making decisions on it. A while back I posted about the initial floor plan for our renovation, and this weekend we were able to visit some interior kitchen design places and really start narrowing our choices when it comes to the materials being used. There are things that I know that I want– gray subway tile with white grout, white cabinets, brushed nickel hardware, and adding an island. In my dream kitchen the island would be a warm dark wood and the rest of the cabinets white, but we are not gutting the entire kitchen and rather are rearranging the existing cabinets and are using an existing cabinet to help build the island in order to save money so we are going to end up painting both the cabinets and the island white. At first I was a little skeptical with all the white, but with new darker floors and gray subway tiles I think there will be enough warmth in an otherwise sterile white kitchen. This is such an important room so thus far it’s been a daunting process in deciding on all the aesthetics but after this weekend I’m starting to feel pretty confident.

Just a reminder for your eyes of what our kitchen currently looks like!

And here's my board for the room. To save on money we will be putting laminate on the countertops, but we will be putting quartz or granite on the island. The two laminates that we found this weekend that I'm liking is Wilsonart Satin Stainless (left in photo) and Formica Elemental Concrete (right in photo). As for the island, I'm loving the Alpina White quartz. This quartz is almost double the cost of other granites that we saw this weekend so I'm hoping I can find a granite that looks similar. If not, then we will have to look into saving money elsewhere. As for the flooring, the other weekend at the parade of homes there was a home that we fell in love with the flooring and luckily this weekend we were able to find  a very similar, if not, the exact one.  It's reclaime flint oak planks and it will replace all of the current flooring that is in the kitchen and eating area.

As I mentioned, all of the cabinets will be painted white and the paint color I've decided on is Dove White from Benjamin Moore. I haven't decided on the exact subway tile that I want to use but I know it will be gray and will go from the countertops to the bottom of the cupboards. We will be doing a lot of the work ourselves, painting the cabinets, laying the floor, doing the tile work, so this will definitely be a time consuming project!

What do you guys think? We are planning on starting this project in late August so stay tuned!

  1. I love what you chose, esp the subway tile. I actually think if you did it in a herrongbone pattern, it may add a little bit of uniqueness! Just an idea! :)

    1. Thanks for stoping by Julie! I absolutely love herringbone so I love love that idea!! We will be doing all the tiling ourselves though, so I'm not too sure how confident either one of us is in doing a herringbone pattern because the more intricate cuts! I definitely will have herringbone tiling in a house one day though!

  2. Love the look! We have laminate counter tops and they are a lot nicer than what my parents had back in the day. If you haven't been to The Williams Studio on 29th Street, be sure to go. It was just redone and it's amazing!
