Laundry Closet Makeover

In my two month update blog, I showed you a picture of our laundry closet makeover, however I didn't give much detail about it. That said, I thought that today I would go over in more depth all that we did. I apologize in advance for the limited pictures and instructions of how Paul built the shelves. I was out of town for work while he did it, and we did this project before I decided that I was going to start a blog!

When we bought the house, it did not come with a washer or dryer. What was left was an empty closet with one shelf and some very dirty walls. Since we like clean clothes, this was the first project that we tackled.

When coming up with a plan of what to do with the space, I knew that I wanted something that was functional, had a cabinet to store the laundry detergent, and be somewhat aesthetically pleasing. I don't hate doing laundry, but I also don't love doing it, so if it looked somewhat pretty I thought maybe I'd enjoy it more. Not sure if it really works that way, but I at least like to tell myself that!

While I was a way for a 12 day work trip, my husband started the makeover on the laundry closet! The first thing he did was paint and patch the walls. He painted it Sherwin Williams On the Rocks which is a very light gray. After painting the walls, he installed the cabinet. In order to make it easier to install, he put the cabinet in before the washer and dryer came.  After the washer and dryer were delivered,  he then added floating shelves using this tutorial . He re-used the shelf that was originally in the closet to make the floating shelves. When I came home from my trip, this is what was accomplished so far (minus the plant and jars).

The tutorial that I linked above shows you how to make the shelf, but here is an image under the bottom shelf that will give you a better idea of how the shelf is built. Since the bottom shelf sits lower than eye level, we did not paint the wood because no one would see it.

The bottom of the top shelf, however, is somewhat visible to the eye, so Paul painted the wood under the top shelf.

And here is how the laundry closet looks today! I'm sure I will make some modifications to it in the future, but I'm loving the results so far!

To store the powder detergent and detergent pods, I added a large and medium size glass jars.   I don't use powder detergent anymore so the large jar will soon be switched over to the Oxy Clean powder that I use on my whites.

To add some color in the space, I added a little faux plant. Paul laughs that I would put this in a closet because not even a real plant could live in there but oh well I like it there for now!

We go through a ton of paper towel, so since the laundry closet is in a hallway right off the kitchen I thought it would be a handy spot to store a few extras.

Having a cabinet in the laundry closet is really nice for storing the laundry detergent, but I also use it to put other household items that you never know where to store in your house.

I then repainted the laundry closet doors with a fresh coat of white paint.

And lastly, replaced the old wood knobs with new brushed nickel ones!

I hope you liked the laundry closet makeover! Let me know what you think in the comment section below,  find me on Facebook, and see what I'm up to via Instagram

  4. You can mitigate this somewhat by installing a desk lamp for them and otherwise ensuring that the space is well-lit, but older kids may require a more dedicated workspace if they are to do quality work. In the meantime, while they are young, a desk under a bunk can be a great environment for kids to be kids and let their creativity blossom. bed with slide
