Kitchen layout and Style Poll

Happy Wednesday, everyone! On yesterday's blogpost I shared images of our kitchen and talked a little about the exciting future plans that we have for the space. I mentioned how we wanted to rearrange some of the cabinets to better utilize the space, however, there is a good chance you got lost in my longwinded explanation so today I'm here to show you some visuals of what I was talking about! Luckily enough, I came across a free home designer program that allowed me to not only  create a visual for all of you, but the program even let me choose different quartz countertops and wood finishes so it was even extremely helpful for me to do this in order to play around with ideas. Let's just say it was a win win situation for everyone!

Okay let's quickly recap, here is what our kitchen currently looks like. The peninsula is what we want to rearrange.

To do that, means putting the oven and existing cabinets in the peninsula against the wall and creating an "L" shape with the cabinets.  By creating an L shape with the cabinets, it will free up room for an island. It will also help make the space feel more open.

Here are 3D images of the design plan. It's by no means perfect, and cabinets will be above the refrigerator and microwave, but at least it serves as a semi decent visual, right? Oh and that random console table is supposed to be our buffet, I couldn't find icons for floating shelves.

So what do you think? Do you think it utilizes the space better? We are still left with an empty corner in the kitchen, but I think I might eventually put a bar cart in the corner in order to get our Keurig off the counter. Additionally, the island will be wider than what is shown and the countertop will overhang some so that we can fit two barstools.

So, now that I've shown you the layout of the kitchen I thought I would share the two different styles that we are looking at. They are very similar but the main difference is whether we want to go warm tones or cool tones. We want the cabinets in the "L"shape to be white and the island to be dark but now the question becomes do we want to go for a warm or cool toned kitchen?

1. Warm kitchen: I found this kitchen on houzz and it was love at first site. I love how warm and inviting the space is and the design could go very well with our farmhouse table and buffet that is similar to the table shown here. One thing that makes this space warm feeling is the paint color, but we already have gotten our kitchen painted a greige color so although our paint color does have some warm undertones, it won't be as warm as this. Also the island in this design has a much more warm brown wood with lighter countertops that I'm drawn too.

2. Cool Kitchen: I realize that this picture isn't nearly as Pinterest worthy as the photo above, but that's because this is a kitchen in a new house near us. We knew that we wanted white cabinets and a dark island, so when we saw this come on the market we went to one of the open houses to see it in person. (If you are thinking of doing a kitchen remodel yourself, I would highly recommend going to see other kitchens if you have the ability. It definitely helps give you ideas in terms of finishes and also helps you realize what things you do and don't like about certain designs). Knowing that I loved #1 we also wanted to explore the idea of a cooler toned kitchen. Things that make this space feel cooler? The color of the walls, subway tiles, counters and island. The island in this space is much darker, it was almost espresso/black. In order to have the countertops compliment the island they went almost black on the countertops with the white cabinets. Since we have greige walls, more gray than beige though, I love the idea of dark gray subway tiles like in this kitchen to add some contrast.

Now I'm interested to see which one you all like better. That said, for fun I thought I'd do a poll. I realize that the first image is probably a better picture, but the questions here is which style do you prefer more, warm toned or cool toned kitchens?

    1. We are both leaning towards the warm as well. Directly left of the fridge is the door to our garage and then next to that is two doors which are the pantry. Across from the pantry doors is a laundry closet so it's more like a hallway. That said, we can't add anything to the left of the fridge.

  3. Okay, so I love both. Here's my opinion for you based off of my kitchen. I'd say our kitchen leans toward the cool tones. While I love it, I wish I had more of the accents that the warm kitchen offers. The hardware, those AMMMMazing lights above the island, and textured bar stools. Both kitchens are lovely and I'm sure your kitchen is going to be beautiful... Now I need to vote...hmm....

    1. That's good to know!!! I feel like we will end up doing a combination of both.. if that's possible:) Oh and I LOVVEE the lights above the island too. We have cathedral ceilings in our kitchen though, so I'm not sure if that will be possible in ours. Keeping my fingers crossed though!

  4. May I offer a suggestion? We live in a new build development that offered about 10 different floor plans to choose from. One plan has an kitchen option that I think will benefit your design. On the wall to the right of the oven is a lot of empty space. Have you considered adding base cabinets for extra storage, extra counter space and to complete the wall? I have seen it built both ways, with and without the addition of continued base cabinets. My girlfriend, who lives in this floor plan with her family, didn't get the additional base cabinets and always wishes that she did. Just a suggestion and an idea you may want to consider. OH! And yes, I voted warm tones :)

    1. Hi Darlene!! Thank you so much for giving your opinion! Yes, I love that idea! My husband and I have definitely considered doing that! The only reason we may not, is because we are trying to make this mini renovation as affordable as possible, and we are trying to only use our existing cabinets that we already own, besides the cabinets for the island and ones for the microwave, so extending it to the corner means buying more cabinets and more $$. We haven't gotten formal quotes yet though, so who knows maybe it will be in the budget:) Oh and great choice, warm is my favorite too!!

  5. if patterned in the past decades should have the "triangular" basics, wherein the sink, refrigerator, and stove are on triangle angles with a big space in the kitchen center, so that it would be easier for the mother or the woman of the house to move around. kitchen remodeler st. louis

  7. There are many ways to incorporate navy blue into your new kitchen set up, but one way that you should watch is in the cabinets.
