I've been a little MIA on the blog and Instagram lately, but that doesn't mean that we haven't made some progress on projects in our home! Last May I shared our basement makeover design plans, and today I thought I would give you an update as to where we are since we've been making progress lately. We still have a ways to go, but I always think it's fun to see progress shots on projects before the final reveal.
This was our original design plan for the space, but like most projects, however, we have since made some modifications from our original idea.
So far we have repainted all of the walls in Eider White by Benjamin Moore to really lighten up the space. I was hoping it was going to be even lighter, but since our basement is pretty dark the wall paint looks more gray than I originally was planning but I think it works.
We wanted didn't want to spend a lot of money on this space as we don't use it all the time so we used pieces we already owned (like this couch, which I bought in college) and incorporated some other really great finds like this $25 lamp we scored from Lowes clearance. We have made some other changes like purchasing the white shag rug which has really brightened up the space, added some accent throws, and got this ottoman. We were originally going to build another coffee table, but we use this space to watch movies and plan for this space to be a comfy casual space where toddlers could play so an ottoman seemed like the better choice.
I don't have any art hanging over the couch right now but I plan to tackle that in the next couple of weeks.
Here is what I'm thinking to do on that wall. I already own the mirror, (which I scored for $19.99!!) but I am just waiting for knobs to arrive so I can hang it and give it that coastal look that I love. The mirror is on the small side, so I plan to put black rimmed gallery frames on both sides of the mirror for scale purposes, but I also think the black makes it a little more masculine feel which is important since this was supposed to be my husbands space (Oops!).
I'm not usually one to like the look of bean bags, but I will want this to be a family friendly cozy area where one day we can watch movies from our projector as a family and where everyone can lounge and be cozy. Plus I love buffalo plaid anything and it ties in the black frames very well, but I don't want to regret purchasing one since it is kind of pricey. Mom's let me know, do your kids like sitting on bean bags to read/watch tv or am I just unrealistically dreaming? ha!
Under the window in our basement there is a half wall, so in the next month I plan to board and batten it like we did in our front hallway. Since we currently use this space to exclusively watch movies, we also plan to replace the blinds with black out blinds to make the projected movie even more clear.
We stuck to the original plan and got this ikea cube organizer to use for storage, and as a media console to have the speaker sit on. Nothing will go above this unit as this is the wall that the movie is projected onto. I do have plans to style the upper cubes, and have dreams that maybe kids books can be stored here one day (If you can't tell I might have a case of baby fever;)
The only thing that my husband demanded we have for this space was a leather recliner like so. It's not the most attractive piece of furniture but it makes him happy so that's all that maters.
I plan to do something different with this end table and table lamp but I haven't decided what I want to do, so that's anything thing I need to figure out.
What used to be a blank tan wall is now a desk with a built in cabinet and shiplap!! It still needs to be completely styled out, and when it's all finished I will do a post just on this area so stay tuned!
Lastly if you can see, we have also board and battened the bottom of our stairs and painted the wall a dark gray! On this blank wall right by it, I plan to pick up some Ribba frames when I'm at Ikea next month and create a gallery wall using black and white photos from places we have traveled to. We are going to Kauai in April so I plan to take my Canon T3i to capture some pictures specifically for this space.
So what do you think of our basement progress? I still has a ways to go but we've definitely have made some progress. Stay tuned for more updates of this space and more projects around our home (next week I'll finally be sharing our new kitchen floors!
Have a great weekend!
