Painting All the Doors and Trim

Hey everyone! Since it is Thursday, I thought I would do a Throwback Thursday post about one of the first projects that we did in our house and looking back I'm so glad we did because it made such a large impact . This project was painting all of the doors, closet doors, and trim in the entire first floor of our house. We have not gotten to the basement yet, but we plan on tackling that this summer.   I know this is not as glamorous of a project as some other things that I have done, but I promise you, it's makes a huge difference within a home.

If you have been following me for awhile, you may remember how we tackled painting all of the walls on the first floor when we first moved in(blog post on that). Painting all the doors and trim was done during this phase as well. The reason why we decided to tackle all of this immediately was essentially because we wanted to make the house feel like it was ours.  The people before us had 5 young children which meant us moving into a house where every wall and door had some sort of crayon mark, small handprint, dirt or dent on it. In order to make the space feel like it was ours it was important that we started with a clean and fresh slate, and let me tell you, painting doors and trim does just that. Even if you aren't moving into a new home, painting your trim and doors is a perfect solution to instantly brightening up a space.

Although this unfinished space in our basement looks a little creepy, it's been SOOO nice to have when doing projects like this. By having all the doors in one room made my job so much easier. Before I began painting the doors, I wiped all the doors down using a damp microfiber towel and removed the handles on the door. I also put a piece of cardboard under each door in order to keep paint from getting on the concrete.

Paul thought he would help with this project by taking a picture of me. Not sure what my hand is doing though: am I petting the door? Talking to the door via sign language?  I guess we will never know! The paint that we used was Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint because it has enamel in it and  is meant for doors and trim . We also decided to paint them bright white because I personally like that fresh look. If you like a more soft white, you can always get the paint tinted.  The way that I applied the paint was by using a small foam roller brush. This works a lot better than just a paint brush because it doesn't show brush strokes. In areas with smaller crevices like on the boxes on the doors, I used the tip of the foam brush to reach those areas.  I painted the front side of all of the doors and then the following night I did the backside. There were a couple of doors that had marks on them that wouldn't wash off and needed two coats of paint to fully get covered.

Some of the backs of the doors were a very off white color. Look at that drastic change!

I don't have many photos of trim painting because Paul did all of the trim painting besides this room which is the guest bedroom/one day nursery and which is no longer pink. For the trim we used the same  Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint and used a medium size Purdy brush to apply it. We decided to paint all of the trim before we painted the walls, so when painting the trim we only had to tape off the carpet. Then, when we painted the walls we taped off the top of the trim. If you are only painting the trim and not the walls then you would tape the floor and above the trim.

Doesn't this just look so bright and white and clean!? I love how polished all of the new trim work looks.  Along with painting all of the doors we also replaced all of the handles and hinges with brushed nickel ones. This isn't necessary, Paul just wasn't a fan of the gold brass ones.

What do you think? Do you like the look of the bright white trim? Painting the trim and doors can be time consuming, but I promise you it's worth it!
